Your host university files the MVV/permit — you do NOT · Confirm your host has started the filing before you book flights
The Netherlands is the only country in our coverage where the STUDENT does not file the residence-permit application. IND-recognised sponsors (universities) submit the MVV/permit on your behalf. You provide documents and biometrics, they do the paperwork with IND. The single thing you need to verify is: has your host started the filing? Everything downstream (biometrics, MVV collection, arrival) is triggered by IND acknowledging that filing.
- 1Ask your host's international office: 'Have you submitted my MVV/study residence permit to IND?' — get the case reference number.
- 2Send them the documents they request (usually: passport scan, admission letter acceptance, funds proof, health form).
- 3Book biometrics with your local Dutch embassy or VFS once IND acknowledges the filing.
- 4Collect the MVV sticker, travel to NL, pick up the residence permit card at the IND desk your host arranges.

IND is the federal immigration body. Your host files with them — you don't need to log in yourself for the permit itself.

The RNI/BRP switch is a hard 4-month threshold. A 45-day exchange is clearly RNI; a 130-day programme crosses into BRP. Don't estimate — pick the option that matches your actual arrival and departure dates.
